On Monday morning, high drama ensued in Shaheen Bagh, southeast Delhi, when South Delhi Municipal Corporation personnel arrived with a bulldozer amid heavy police deployment. The authorities were unable to carry out their goal to clear encroachments from the major route, which they had announced some days prior, since dozens of people came to protest the plan. Residents said they had just removed their own encroachments, which was a surprising change of events.
Not just that. Leaders from the Congress and the AAP also protested in front of the bulldozer, forcing officials to halt the demolition. Around 11 a.m., a bulldozer and 20 corporation officials arrived on Shaheen Bagh’s main route. Companies of the CRPF were also deployed in the region, which resembled a conflict-torn place. A significant number of journalists showed up to cover the drive.
