South Korea reported 286,294 new COVID-19 cases as of midnight Tuesday, up from 24 hours earlier, bringing the total number of infections to 14,553,644, according to health officials on Wednesday.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the daily caseload increased from 266,135 the previous day but decreased from 424,597 the previous week (KDCA).
The recent resurgence was fueled by the spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant and its subvariant BA.2, particularly in the Seoul metropolitan area.
52,430 of the new cases were from Seoul. The number of newly infected people in Gyeonggi province and the western port city of Incheon was 76,899 and 14,844, respectively.
