K Ponmudy, the Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister, tried to clarify his remark about Hindi speakers “selling paani puri” on Friday, claiming that it was made in the context of what he called a dearth of jobs in the northern states.
Ponmudy had questioned assertions that learning Hindi will get you a job in the south, and had inquired as to who is currently selling ‘pani puri’ in the city .
The minister’s statement came amid indignation in the state over the claimed plan by the federal government to make Hindi a third language in schools.
The minister then said that he made the comment because there is no labor available in the northern states.
“There are many Tamil Nadu people who work in the northern states. In this view, I stated that a variety of people from the north come here to work since there is no employment in the northern states “He was mentioned.
