Workers for the Congress were detained this morning as they prepared to march to protest the National Herald case against party leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
In New Delhi, footage showed Congress workers being detained and thrown into buses while raising slogans in support of their leaders. Later in the day, more Congress employees are expected to go to the streets as part of the party’s show of strength.
Mr Gandhi is scheduled to appear before the Enforcement Directorate today in connection with the money laundering investigation.
The protest march was denied permission by Delhi Police yesterday night, citing the “communal and law and order situation” as well as VVIP activities. Congress leaders pleaded with them to reconsider their choice, but they refused.
