Danish police believe a shopping mall shooting that killed three people and seriously injured four others was not motivated by terrorism. According to authorities, the gunman acted alone and appears to have chosen his victims at random.
According to Copenhagen chief police inspector Sren Thomassen, the victims — a 17-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl, both Danes, and a 47-year-old Russian man — were killed when the gunman opened fire in the Field’s shopping mall, one of Scandinavia’s largest.
Two Danish and two Swedish citizens were treated for gunshot wounds and were in critical but stable condition, according to Thomassen. Several other people were injured as they fled the shopping mall, he said.
According to Thomassen, police have no evidence that anyone assisted the gunman, a 22-year-old Dane. He stated that, while the motive is unknown, there is no evidence of terrorism, and that the suspect would be arraigned later Monday on preliminary murder charges.
“Our inquiry, the records we studied, the items we uncovered, or the witness statements we received do not provide any evidence that may corroborate that this is a terrorist act,” he said.
He confirmed that the suspect was known to mental health services but did not provide any additional information.
