AIADMK joint coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami resigned from his position as urban district secretary, which he had held for the previous 11 years, and successfully fielded his strong supporter R Elangovan for the position.
Palaniswami was appointed as Salem urban district secretary in 2011 by former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. Later, he was appointed to her cabinet as the state highways minister, a position he held from 2011 to 2016. When the AIADMK formed the government for the second time, he retained his position in the ministry.
“While he became chief minister after Jaya’s death, he did not renounce his party position in the district,” said a high-ranking party official.
Following the announcement of elections for internal party posts in the district, EPS filed his nomination for the position of urban secretary on Monday, the last day to file papers. “Because no one challenged his nomination, we expected him to be elected to the position.” “We were taken aback when the party’s high command announced Elangovan as district urban secretary on Wednesday evening,” the source said.
He claimed that EPS had asked Elangovan to file his papers for the position at the eleventh hour while keeping the information private.
Another party functionary, who did not want to be identified, stated that many senior party leaders had advised EPS to give up his position as urban secretary to his supporters because he was also the party’s joint coordinator.
