A railway crossing near Nedunchalai Nagar, on the city’s outskirts, on the Bengaluru-Kanyakumari national route, has to be repaired.
When addressed by Salem activist T Suriya Prabu, who claims the bridge is dangerous to hundreds of motorists every day, both the highway and railway authorities rejected responsibility for its upkeep.
A part of the bridge’s parapet wall was weakened after a collision with it. Furthermore, the pedestrian walkway was damaged in various locations.
When approached by Kulothungan, project director of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), he stated that the Salem railway division should maintain the train over bridge. The railway was unable to carry out civil works despite repeated reminders from the National Highway Authority. We would assume responsibility and make the necessary repairs if the railway division refused, he said. The NHAI, on the other hand, is responsible for maintaining the bridge, according to a Salem railway division officer.
