Jignesh Mevani, an MLA from Gujarat’s Vadgam, was arrested by the Assam Police at the Circuit House in Palanpur, Gujarat, around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday (April 20). Mevani has been transferred to Ahmedabad, from whence he would be taken to Guwahati, according to India Today.
According to the Deccan Herald, Mevani was arrested because of recent tweets in which he termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi a follower of M.K. Gandhi killer Nathuram Godse. Mevani had added that Modi, who “considers Godse as God,” should urge for peace and harmony in Gujarat in the face of communal riots.
