Mamata Banerjee, who is enmeshed in a political fight following the burning alive by a mob of eight people in a village in Bengal’s Birbhum, will pay a visit to the area today. The BJP, which is in power in the state, has accused the Chief Minister of presiding over a catastrophic collapse of law and order.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the assassinations as “heinous” and said the perpetrators should not be forgiven.
In retaliation for the death of a local Trinamool Congress member in a crude bomb attack, a mob imprisoned eight individuals in their homes and burned them alive, including three women and two children. Charred bodies, mostly belonging to one family, were discovered a day later.
Mamata Banerjee promised strong action on Wednesday, “regardless of party colors,” and said she will visit the town of Bogtui, where the tragic incident occurred.
