Jasprit Bumrah, India’s captain for the fifth Test, is looking to the talismanic MS Dhoni for inspiration as he prepares to make his captaincy debut in the game’s longest format.
Bumrah learned he would captain the Indian team on Thursday morning after Rohit Sharma tested positive for COVID-19, ruling him out of the game.
Taking on an in-form England team will be a difficult task, but Bumrah is up for it.
As a cricketer, you always want to put your skills to the test. I’ve talked to a lot of cricketers.
“I remember speaking with MS (Dhoni), and he told me that he had never captained any side before taking over as India’s captain for the first time.” He is currently considered one of the greatest captains of all time So I’m concentrating on how I can help the team rather than on what I’ve done in the past or how cricketing conventions or rules have been established.”
It is unusual for a fast bowler to lead the Indian team, and Bumrah described the honor and responsibility as immense. The pacer has had a meteoric rise in international cricket, including the five-day format, in which he has only played four seasons after making his Test debut in January 2018.
“It has always been a dream of mine to represent India in Tests, and this opportunity to lead the side is the pinnacle of my career.” I’m overjoyed to have been given this opportunity. I had a lot of confidence in myself.
“On Thursday, I found out I’d be captain after Rohit Sharma tested positive for COVID for the second time.” When I learned that I would be leading the side, I informed my family first.”
Bumrah stated that the visitors are eager to take on the challenge.
“We’re completely focused on the game and fully prepared,” said the 28-year-old. “We already played a practice match against Leicestershire on a different wicket than this one.”
He’s already had lengthy discussions about the job with former captain Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
“Their contributions have been critical. Virat’s advice will be invaluable when I’m bowling or making (some) changes. Virat’s advice will be invaluable and always necessary for us “Bumrah stated.
In Rohit’s absence, the team has decided on the openers for the game, but Bumrah was not ready to reveal that a day before the game.
“Rohit is a vital player for us, and we will miss him in this game,” we have also decided on the openers against England.
