NCP chief Sharad Pawar says he will not run for President, putting an end to opposition parties’ plans.

In the midst of efforts to forge consensus for an opposition-backed candidate in the presidential election, NCP chief Sharad Pawar quietly shot down a proposal to support him as a candidate. “I am not in the race, and I will not be the opposition candidate for President,” the 81-year-old ex-defence minister and CM told a meeting of NCP cabinet members on Monday.

Pawar’s statement came a day after the Maharashtra Congress endorsed his candidacy. Sanjay Singh of the AAP had also approached him on Sunday. According to an NCP leader, Pawar will facilitate a dialogue among opposition parties to ensure unity on the issue. According to an NCP source, Congress’ Ghulam Nabi Azad is a viable option.
