As India scrambles to refill depleted supplies at power plants in order to avoid a full-blown power crisis, several passenger trains have been cancelled to allow speedier transit of coal cars.

The hot weather is pushing up demand for coal, which accounts for around 70% of the country’s electrical generation. Several sections of India are experiencing protracted blackouts, and several sectors are reducing output due to a scarcity of fossil fuels, posing a threat to the economy’s recovery from the pandemic’s impact. At a time when the government is attempting to control high energy costs fueled by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the possibility of more inflation is mounting.
