Srilanka president
Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the president of Sri Lanka, and his family had taken a flight from their country to the Maldives. He arrived in the Maldives early on Wednesday, amid fierce opposition. At the Velana airport, the Maldivian government welcomed the president.
He had stated that he will step down over the weekend, thus it is likely that he will do so on Wednesday.
He and his family arrived in the Maldives earlier on Wednesday, according to an airport official, and were taken to an unspecified location.
Since the nation has been in turmoil, the president enjoys immunity from arrest, and it’s possible that he wanted to travel abroad before stepping down to avoid being detained.
Rajapaksa would resign once an all-party administration is in place, according to Prime Minister Wickremsinghe.
