
For the second time in five weeks, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has proclaimed a state of emergency, granting security forces broad powers to cope with increasing anti-government rallies.
The emergency orders are expected to go into effect at midnight on Friday.
The state of emergency empowers the police and security forces to arrest and imprison anybody at will.
