The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) became the first party in the Rajya Sabha to reach 100 members since 1988. The BJP now has 101 MPs in the Upper House of Parliament after winning a landslide victory in the Uttar Pradesh assembly election. The BJP was able to accomplish this by capturing four of the 13 seats that were up for election on Thursday. The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), a saffron party coalition partner, won one Rajya Sabha seat from Assam. Three North-eastern states — Assam, Tripura, and Nagaland — gave the BJP four Rajya Sabha seats. The BJP has also expanded the number of legislators from the region in the Upper House.
