Apart from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka’s entire cabinet resigned on Sunday as the ruling political dynasty seeks to overcome a deepening economic crisis.
The South Asian country is experiencing catastrophic food, gasoline, and other necessary shortages, as well as record inflation and crippling power outages, in its worst downturn since gaining independence from Britain in 1948.
In the face of mounting public unrest, President Rajapaksa proclaimed a nationwide state of emergency late Friday. He stated that the decision was made in the interests of public safety, public order, and the maintenance of key supplies and services.
