A special court in Bengaluru has ordered the registration of a special criminal case against former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, a blow for the BJP leader. The Lokayukta Police has been ordered to launch a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act’s Section 13(1)(d) and Section 13(2). During the hearing, Special Judge B Jayantha Kumar dismissed the Lokayukta Police’s closure report and ordered that the case be investigated.
On January 18, 2021, the Lokayukta police reported to the special court that Yediyurappa had committed “no offence” under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge Shridhar Gopalakrishna Bhat asked the Deputy SP assigned to the Lokayukta’s police wing to probe the corruption matter further in July last year. He referred to the closure report as ‘perfunctory,’ and urged the investigating officer to keep in mind the Karnataka High Court’s views on the delay in conducting an investigation.
