On the first day of its invasion of Ukraine, Russia grabbed this little, rocky outcrop in the northwest of the Black Sea, and it has since played a significant part in the conflict.
Russian forces have left Snake Island, also known as Zmiinyi Island, after more than four months of constant Ukrainian bombing.
In order to demonstrate that it was not impeding grain exports, Russia claims to have evacuated its garrison. Ukraine has rejected this assertion as Moscow has continued to shell its grain storage facilities.
The small garrison charged with protecting it, made up of first Ukrainians and then Russians, has been referred to by military experts as “sitting ducks” since the island is vulnerable to attacks from the air and the sea from all sides.
Snake Island, which the Russians took control of on February 24, is barely 35 kilometers (22 miles) off the Ukrainian shoreline, and within the range of missile, artillery, and drone strikes from the land.
And the Ukrainian military has done just that, claiming responsibility for a string of devastating assaults on both the island and any ships carrying troops or powerful weapons.
